Should I set the friendship free and see what happens?

I had an emotional relationship with a friend. We put that to rest for the sake of our committed relationships. We started seeing a bond beyond that of a typical platonic friendship. We have worked hard at staying in touch and sharing in each others lives. Lately, however, he doesn't keep in touch as much, although just recently he told me that if something happened with our committed relationships, he would find me for a real relationship. I've tried to talk with him about why he doesn't converse and stay in touch as he once did....he remains silent. Should I set this friendship free and see if it comes back?
