How will space exploration improve most peoples lives?

Please don't say the technology that eventually becomes available to the average person because that could have been gotten at 0.001% of the cost if it weren't invested in this high reliability, redundant, and wasteful spending endeavor. Its not that I necessarily disagree with all space exploration its just the nature of the beast. It costs alot of additional money to protect astronauts' lives and insure that everything will work at virtually 100% reliability after it has traveled several months or years in a very hostile environment.
